IFZA explained: who the freezone suits
IFZA has grown quickly since it launched as a licensed freezone authority in Dubai Silicon Oasis. It sits in the middle of the UAE freezone market: not the cheapest option available (that tends to be RAKEZ or SHAMS), not the most prestigious (DMCC and DIFC hold those positions), but a practical, cost-efficient choice for founders who want a Dubai-registered company without paying a premium for a name-brand address.
The question worth asking before you apply is not just “is IFZA cheap?” but “does IFZA suit what I am actually building?”
What kind of business is IFZA designed for?
IFZA works best for founders whose business is portable, service-based, or trading-focused, and who do not need an impressive physical office as part of their product.
Think online consultants, e-commerce operators, marketing agencies, software firms, general trading companies, and remote-first founders who want a clean UAE base rather than a Dubai Media City address. The freezone covers a broad range of commercial, professional, and service activities, and it allows you to bundle several related activities onto one licence, useful if your work spans consulting, training, and trading, for example.
It is less suited to businesses where the registered address is part of the pitch to clients, or to activities that require regulatory oversight beyond the freezone itself (financial services, healthcare, certain legal services).
What does IFZA actually include?
A standard IFZA package gives you a freezone company with 100% foreign ownership, a UAE trade licence, and a flexi-desk arrangement that qualifies you for a residence visa. There is no mandatory paid-up share capital requirement, which reduces the upfront financial commitment compared with some mainland or DIFC structures.
The visa allocation scales with the package you select. Most founders starting out take a one- or two-visa package and upgrade later if they hire locally.
One practical note: the flexi-desk is a shared workspace booking rather than a dedicated office. That distinction matters for banking, which we will come to below.
How does IFZA compare with other freezones?
| Freezone | Location | Best for | Relative cost | Physical office |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IFZA | Dubai (Silicon Oasis) | Services, trading, remote founders | Low-to-mid | Flexi-desk only |
| DMCC | Dubai (JLT) | Commodities, professional services, prestige | Mid-to-high | Flexi-desk and offices |
| RAKEZ | Ras Al Khaimah | Budget setups, light industry, warehousing | Low | Flexi-desk and warehouses |
| SHAMS | Sharjah | Media, publishing, creative | Low | Flexi-desk |
| DIFC | Dubai (financial district) | Finance, law, funds, regulated firms | High | Offices required |
| ADGM | Abu Dhabi | Finance, family offices, tech | High | Offices required |

The banking question
This comes up constantly, and it is worth being direct about it.
UAE banks have tightened their onboarding processes significantly over the past few years. The freezone you choose does affect your chances of opening a business account, but it is not the only factor. Banks assess your activity, your clients’ geography, the source of your funds, your personal banking history, and whether your business has real substance.
IFZA entities can and do open accounts with UAE banks, Emirates NBD, Mashreq, and digital-first options like Wio are among those that work with freezone companies. The founders who struggle are usually those with a thin business plan, no client evidence, or a high-risk activity profile. A flexi-desk without any trading history makes underwriters nervous regardless of which freezone issued the licence.
If banking is a concern in your specific situation, it is worth discussing the freezone choice and your business profile together before you apply. The decisions interact.
What IFZA does not give you
A few things to be clear about before committing:
IFZA is a freezone, so your company cannot trade directly with UAE mainland customers without a local distribution arrangement or a separate mainland licence. If your market is UAE-based businesses or consumers, this matters.
The Silicon Oasis location is east of central Dubai. It is well connected by road but not walking distance from the financial district or DIFC. For founders who plan to be client-facing in Dubai regularly, this is worth factoring in.
IFZA also does not carry the same brand recognition as DMCC in international markets. For most founders that is irrelevant. For some, particularly those selling into regulated industries or raising investment, the registered address and jurisdiction do get noticed.
Is IFZA the right freezone for you?
For a solo founder or small team building a service or trading business, wanting a real UAE company, residence visa, and a manageable cost of setup, IFZA is a reasonable and well-regarded choice. The founders we work with who do best here are those who have a clear business model, are not dependent on walk-in clients, and have done the groundwork on banking before they apply.
If you need a premium Dubai address, regulated activity permissions, or significant physical space, look at DMCC, DIFC, or ADGM depending on what you are doing.
If budget is the primary driver and a Dubai address is not essential, RAKEZ is worth a side-by-side comparison.
Getting the freezone right matters more than most people expect, not just for the licence, but for banking, visa allocation, and long-term flexibility. If you would like a clear read on which structure fits your situation, get in touch with the DTC team.
