Renewing and maintaining your UAE residence visa
UAE residence visas do not renew themselves, and the consequences of getting the timing wrong are concrete: daily fines, a blocked Emirates ID, and complications the next time you apply for anything from a bank account to a school place. The good news is that the process is predictable once you understand what drives it.
How long does a UAE residence visa last?
That depends on the visa category and the sponsor. As at October 2026, u.ae gives one, two or three years for a sponsored visa and five or ten years for an unsponsored one. As a broad guide:

The UAE stopped putting residence stickers in passports in April 2022, and your Emirates ID now serves as proof of residence. When the residence expires, the Emirates ID expires with it. Check your status on the ICP or GDRFA app if you are unsure.
What does the renewal process actually involve?
The mechanics differ slightly between emirates. Dubai renewals run through GDRFA (the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs). Renewals in Abu Dhabi, RAK, Sharjah and the other emirates use ICP (the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security).
In practice, every renewal requires a current medical fitness test at an approved centre and fresh Emirates ID biometrics. If you hold a visa tied to a company, freezone or mainland, the company’s licence must be active, the visa sponsor must initiate the process, and any outstanding fees or compliance filings need to be cleared first.
Golden Visa renewals follow the same broad steps but tend to be more straightforward, partly because the criteria for holding the visa (the investment threshold, the property value, or the professional qualification) either still applies or it does not.
The 6-month absence rule, and who it catches
This catches more people than it should. If you hold a standard UAE residence visa and stay outside the UAE for more than 180 consecutive days, the visa is cancelled automatically even if it has not reached its expiry date (as stated on u.ae as at October 2026). You would then need to restart the residency process from scratch, not renew.
Golden Visa holders are explicitly exempt from this rule, which is one of the practical reasons founders who travel heavily tend to prioritise it.
If your business model means you spend long stretches outside the UAE, it is worth structuring your residency category accordingly, rather than holding a 2-year visa and hoping for the best.
What needs to be in order before you renew?
A renewal application is only as clean as the underlying structure. Before initiating:
- The sponsoring entity (company, freezone, or individual) must have no outstanding licence renewals or compliance filings.
- Health insurance must be valid. ICP lists valid health insurance as a requirement for every residence renewal category.
- Your Emirates ID must be renewed alongside the visa, not separately as an afterthought.
- Any dependant visas you sponsor (spouse, children, parents) will also need attention; they cannot outlast the primary visa holder’s status.
Dependants and family visas
If you sponsor family members, their residence visas are linked to yours. When you renew, their visas typically need renewing at the same time or shortly after. As at October 2026, you can sponsor sons up to age 25 and unmarried daughters without an age limit, and a dependant’s residence cannot run past your own. The details depend on your family’s specific structure, and it is one of the areas where a quick conversation saves a longer problem later.
Timing: when should you start?
Renewing months ahead (one to six months early) for travel reasons needs special approval from ICP, so for most people the renewal starts in the weeks before expiry. Starting a few weeks early is sensible, it gives time for the medical results to come back, Emirates ID to be processed, and any small administrative issues to be resolved without pressure. Leaving it until the final week is when things go wrong.

Maintaining status between company changes
If you change your company structure, moving between freezones, switching from freezone to mainland, or winding down one entity and opening another, your residency visa needs to be formally cancelled and reissued under the new sponsoring entity. It cannot simply be transferred. The gap between cancellation and the new visa being issued matters, and it is manageable with proper planning.
For founders building a long-term UAE base, getting the renewal cycle embedded into normal business housekeeping is the practical goal. It should be routine, not a scramble.

How long is a UAE residence visa valid?
Sponsored visas, such as employment and investor visas, run for one, two or three years. Unsponsored visas run for five or ten years: the Green Visa is five years, and the Golden Visa is five or ten. Your residence and your Emirates ID now expire together, because the Emirates ID replaced the passport visa sticker in 2022.
What happens if I let my UAE residence visa expire?
You get a grace period after expiry or cancellation, and its length depends on your residence category, from 30 days up to six months. Once it ends, a daily fine applies for each day you stay. If you know you will not renew, cancelling the visa properly and leaving within the grace period keeps your immigration record clean.
Do I need to be inside the UAE to renew my residence visa?
Generally yes, the medical test and Emirates ID biometrics must be done in person in the UAE. If you are outside the country, your sponsor or a PRO can initiate parts of the process, but you will need to enter before the renewal and new ID are issued. Long absences from the UAE can also create a separate complication (see below).
Does leaving the UAE for extended periods affect my visa?
Yes. A residence visa is cancelled automatically if you remain outside the UAE for more than 180 consecutive days, regardless of its stated expiry date. Golden Visa holders are an exception, and some others (such as students abroad or people receiving medical treatment) can apply for permission to stay out longer. If you travel frequently or spend long periods abroad, structuring your visa category correctly matters.
Can I renew my UAE residence visa if my freezone licence has lapsed?
No. If your residency is tied to a freezone or mainland trade licence, the licence must be active and in good standing before the visa renewal will be approved. Letting the licence lapse and then trying to renew the visa is one of the more common and avoidable mistakes we see.
